A room with a view.....updated!

A photo essay on New Zealand back-country toilets...

This post is a bit tongue in cheek but here is a new photo montage of interesting hut toilets I have come across over the years. Some of them are very pedestrian but some are perfectly sited to give you an interesting and in some cases stunning view of their locale.

Awapoto Hut, Inland Abel Tasman Track overlooking Wainui Inlet

Nothing quite defines the type of stay you will have as much as the hut toilet, if you are lucky it will have paper, be clean, fresh and sandfly/wasp proof...

I will continue to add to this montage as I go....ha ha ha!!!

Here are an interesting set of facilities on the waterside esplanade in Picton. These were made in France and as well as being self cleaning they are solar powered, play music while you are using them and automatically open after five minutes. Best you don't spend to much of a penny or everyone will will get much more of a view of you than you or they want!!!

Tres bon, moi oui!!!

The best hut toilets are in an elevated spot with expansive views of the surrounding terrain.

Car accessible camp-sites usually have the best quality facilities as it is easy to transport material to the site when under construction.

Below is a shot of the toilet at the Awaroa Inlet crossing on the Abel Tasman Coast Walk. I had to huddle in this hut for two hours once to escape the rain and sand-flies as I waited for the tide to recede in the inlet.

That's a long time to sit in the bog...

The newer huts have fancy self composting toilets as it is heinously expensive to remove waste products from these remote sites. It is much more environmentally friendly to compost the waste and use it to grow new trees.

The composting toilet at Rod Donald Hut, Banks Peninsula Canterbury

The Rod Donald Hut has such a toilet, the compost is used on the replanted 500 hectare native bush growing around the hut. This is worthy usage for someone who campaigned for the environment and nature for most of his life.
